Bathroom Vanities and Renovations in Northern VA, DC, and Maryland
Bathroom Vanities are an attractive and necessary aspect to any bathroom. What are bathroom vanities? The sink unit with cabinetry underneath and usually a mirror above is considered the bathroom vanity. Bathroom vanities can stand alone, be mobile or built in. In an area where getting ready is one of the primary functions of a bathroom, it makes sense that bathroom vanities are becoming more and more customized! It’s all about comfort, convenience, style, and functionality with bathroom vanities. In terms of design and style, bathroom vanities are a huge feature and can be a great focal point. Bathroom vanities can be fully customized and designed to meet all of your needs. Updating your bathroom vanity or choosing top quality features for your bathroom vanities when designing a new bathroom is a great way to add value to your home when you are getting ready to put your home out on the housing market. Exquisite bathroom vanities add a splash of luxury that often attracts buyers.
Importance of Lighting with Bathroom Vanities
Average bathroom vanities come designed with many benefits including a decent amount of storage space in the form of drawers, cabinets, open shelving. Many homeowners are choosing the versatile storage option of open shelving mixed with cabinetry. Open shelving on bathroom vanities offer an area to showcase your style even further with an area to place baskets, bins, and containers for storage or to display rolled towels for a spa feel. Bathroom vanities also offer added counter space, large mirror space, and plenty of room for lighting. Lighting…a valuable aspect missing in most average built bathrooms and around bathroom vanities. We are talking about quality lighting that is directly focused on your face for the purpose of getting ready for the day. And beauty experts agree. Like celebrity makeup artist Jessica Feigner at Event Makeup in L.A. and San Diego gave us at Sterling Design & Construction some insight on what works best from a beauty standpoint.
“Lighting is everything! When doing my own makeup or makeup for a high profile client who is going to be photographed in many different types of lighting, I need to make sure it looks flawless no matter what. There is nothing worse than showing up to your destination to find makeup lines or other beauty blunders! Using light bulbs around your bathroom vanities that mimic natural light, cut down on yellow hues, and emit white light are best. Make sure your contractor installs lighting that points towards your face from all directions, not just above or behind your face. You should have an equal amount of light illuminating the right and left sides of your face. Overhead lighting is okay to have in combination with the direct lighting on your face but simply only using an overhead light in not recommended! Skip the magnifying side mirrors that some people have installed also. Overhead lighting will enhance dark circles and other areas of the face which often leads people to apply more makeup than normal which ends up looking awful in any other light. Magnifying mirrors are similar in this regard. They enhance your pores and all other imperfections causing most people to apply too much product. Try a 40 or 75 watt bulb that is halogen or something similar that is known to create similar effects. You will notice a difference!”
Lighting for bathroom vanities can be simple, modern, and hidden when built into the wall/ceiling. Lighting can also be a stand out feature like classic old Hollywood by framing the mirror with bulbs that protrude out of the wall running around the entire trim of the mirror. Lighting can take many shapes and designs with many different lighting accents and at Sterling Design & Construction we have lighting specialists who work with our bathroom designers to give you the aesthetics, proper placement and type of lighting that you desire. Aside from having the perfect lighting, bathroom vanities come in a wide range of shapes, sizes, materials, and finishes. Bathroom Vanities can be designed to fit any type of style design concept which is dictated by the building materials and fixtures that are chosen.

A Twist on Traditional Bathroom Vanities & Ideas
Nothing says traditional like pedestal sinks in white porcelain. This is a good choice for smaller bathrooms, although cabinet space will have to be added elsewhere. This definitive look can get an updated look by adding a modern stainless steel faucet. Try going with red wallpaper or paint to really make the white porcelain pop.
For another elegant look on an old style, try custom cabinets that are painted to match the walls exactly. A bold color can create a luxurious environment and add so much to the ambiance of your newly renovated bathroom, and will surely be a talking point of interest with guests.
For added storage space, you can have floor-to-ceiling cabinetry that accents the entire vanity in addition to the storage space that is created within the vanity itself.
Bathroom Vanities for Two:
A double vanity offers couples the ability to use their vanity space at the same time without getting in one another’s way. A double vanity adds double the storage too! A nice feature that can be even extra helpful in a bathroom where two or more people need to use it at the same time is adding a grooming station with seating, counter space, a mirror and extra custom lighting. A middle seated vanity goes well in between the double sink areas.
Bathroom Vanity Design Ideas:
Consult with Sterling Design & Construction for mixing and matching different materials together to create unique bathroom designs.
Create drama and sophistication in your bathroom with contrasting colors and features. Start with a complimenting lighter color scheme, and then add a contrasting dark vanity in espresso. The dark colored vanity will stand out against any lighter colored flooring. Use the counter space to add further dimension with marble slabs and smooth nickel for the faucet set and cabinet door handles.
Bathroom Vanities with Oversized Mirrors:
Large and oversized bathroom vanity mirrors create the illusion of more space. Adding a large mirror to a cramped bathroom can have a dramatic effect similar to a remodel! Also large mirrors help distribute any natural light in the room which can look great and save energy.

Bathroom Vanity Sink Installation Options/ Design Concepts/ Sink Definitions
- Vessel Sinks: The vessel sink is unique because it completely sits on top of the bathroom vanity countertop.
- Drop In Sinks: A drop in sink is just that. Imagine the empty hole in the countertop before a sink is placed. Then imagine setting the sink into the hole with just the rim sitting on the countertop, as if holding it up.
- Undermount Sinks: Similar to a drop in sink when placing it in a hole on your countertop space but instead there is no rim. Instead the countertop suddenly drops into a sink that has no edge or rim as if it is one continuous material.
- Pedestal Sinks: Pedestal sinks are the classic and traditional look of bathroom fixtures. It consists of a (typically white) skinny pedestal that appears to curve in to a sink. Some models come with a pedestal and sink basin as one piece but you can purchase the pedestal and sink basin separately if desired to mix and match styles and sizes.
- Wall Mounted Sinks: Sinks that are mounted on the wall usually give the illusion that they are floating with nothing supporting it from underneath. This is usually for the purpose of saving space, to achieve a contemporary style, and a clean, uncluttered look. Wires, pipes, etc. are hidden inside of the wall.
- Countertop Sinks: Countertop sinks also sit completely on top of the counter. Countertop sinks is simply another name for a vessel sink.
- New & Reclaimed Furniture: Furniture made for bathrooms that have incorporated a sink and a countertop layer on top. DIY with old furniture or antique pieces. At Sterling Design & Construction we can aid you in this project and our staff can also help find you antique pieces already on the market that have already undergone this transformation in to a bathroom vanity.
Modern Bathroom Sink/Basin Idea
For a unique sink option that plays into a modern design scheme, do as the Greeks did. Taking a note from history, about 3,000 years ago in history! Sinks in Greek structures such as the Parthenon were designed using the golden ratio. The golden ratio was a calculation that designed the sink to look like a ramp that declines toward the drain, where the water is then received through what looks like a slot. The straight lines add to the modern atmosphere. This type of sink is typically made from concrete, so it is affordable and can take many design styles, and can easily be found in eco-green friendly building materials.
